Dental Screening

Oral health is an important part of a child’s overall health. Peel Public Health is providing free dental screening, as required by the Ontario Ministry of Health, for students in grades JK, SK, 2 at school on May 15, 2025. Please note that dental screening may be completed earlier than the expected end date. A dental screening is a quick assessment by a registered dental hygienist who will take a look inside your child's mouth. A separate, sterilized mouth mirror is used for each child. It identifies children who may be in need of dental care. After the dental screening, a form with the results will go home with every child screened. If a child is identified with a dental condition requiring immediate dental treatment, the parent may be contacted by a dental staff member. A re-screening may be required. Complete the form you received from the school to indicate whether or not you want your child to participate in the free dental screening.

Immunizations

Vaccine clinics for routine immunizations Human Papillomavirus (HPV-9), Hepatitis B (Hep B), and Meningococcal ACYW-135 are coming to our school! To help protect your child from severe diseases and get them back on track, Peel Public Health will be offering these immunizations to Grade 7 and 8 students at school. Please complete a consent form to ensure your child is vaccinated during the clinic dates at their school. Visit Peel Region’s website and follow the instructions to print and fill out the consent form and the standard assessment questionnaire. Please return the completed form to the school before or on the morning of the clinic date. Students who have an existing consent from earlier this school year or previous years, or if parents completed an online or verbal consent, do not need to complete a new consent (unless your consent choice has changed). Hot & Cold Weather Plan

St. Edmund will follow the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Peel Health guidelines during the hot weather.  Some of the measures we will take are:

  • Monitor heat advisories and adjust activities as necessary and possible;
  • Remind everyone to wear light clothing; a broad brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen;
  • Remind everyone to drink plenty of water (several of our fountains have bottle filling stations);
  • Keep physical activity down during the hot periods of the day;
  • Encourage students to seek shade during recess periods;
  • When possible ensure indoor temperatures are comfortable by keeping blinds/curtains drawn,  keep all windows open, and use authorized circulating fans; as well as,
  • Rotate classes through our air conditioned library.
  • The conditions of the field are monitored regularly and we make the best decision for students and staff

Windchill

At -20 to -24 degrees, time outside will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes.

At -25 degrees or colder, students will remain inside.

We would like to remind all students to dress appropriately for the season by wearing the proper winter attire which includes hats, gloves/mitts, winter coats and boots.

Humidex

At 35-39 degrees, time outside is limited to a maximum of 20 minutes.

At 40 degrees or above, students will remain inside.

Staff will be made aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps and directed to follow first aid procedures promptly.

Please assist us by having your child wear a hat, loose fitting clothing, sunglasses, and by putting sunscreen on them in the morning. Students are invited to bring in a refillable water bottle.
